Godwin Obaseki, the former governor of Edo State, has congratulated Edo Queens FC on their merited nomination for the coveted CAF Women’s Club of the Year 2024 Awards, which will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16, 2024.
Following their incredible football adventure, Edo Queens FC advanced to the CAF Women’s Champions League semi-finals, where they were defeated by the Ladies of DR Congo, who went on to win the title.
In a statement issued through his media adviser, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki, who played a pivotal role in reviving sports in Edo State following a protracted period of low activity, expressed his happiness at the club’s accreditation by the African football regulatory body.
“I wholeheartedly congratulate our girls and Nigeria’s representatives in this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League, Edo Queens FC, on your well-deserved nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year. Your achievements resonate deeply with pride for our nation and the sport itself,” he stated.
As the reigning champions of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), the team’s consistent excellence in both local and continental tournaments highlights their exceptional talent and unwavering team spirit.
Obaseki noted, “This nomination is particularly gratifying as it underscores the impact of the strategic investments and reforms we implemented in Edo State’s sports sector. We focused diligently on nurturing sports development, particularly emphasizing our youth and women.”
He further added, “Today, we are proudly witnessing the fruits of those efforts, with Edo Queens emerging as a dominant force in women’s football across the continent. We celebrate your remarkable contributions and are optimistic that you will clinch the top honors at the CAF Awards ceremony later this year in Morocco. Congratulations once again!”
