On Tuesday, the Federal Road Safety Corps, or FRSC, announced that in January and February of 2025, at least 33 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in Edo State.
This was revealed to reporters in Benin City by Cyril Mathew, the Corps’ Edo State Sector Commander.
According to Mathew, 35 accidents that had taken place around the state between January and February resulted in fatalities. According to him, there were 17 traffic accidents in January 2025 that involved 119 people, 15 of whom died and 69 of whom were injured.
The sector commander also mentioned that 18 incidents involving 171 passengers occurred throughout the state in February, resulting in 18 fatalities and 69 injuries.
Among other things, he blamed drivers around the state for the majority of the collisions, including breaking failure, speeding, reckless driving, cell phone use, and route violations.
However, he cautioned drivers against using their phones while driving, driving while intoxicated, driving at night, and speeding. He claims that in order to protect the safety of both passengers and pedestrians, the command is intensifying its efforts throughout the state to educate drivers about the importance of fostering a safety culture on the road.
However, Mathew urged all parties involved to collaborate with the Corps in order to achieve the state’s goal of zero traffic accidents.
